Aaron Parks has made the lead sheets from his album ‘Invisible Cinema’ available for free on NextBop. It’s a lovely idea and I found it very illuminating to listen to the album again with the lead sheets.
I find writing a lead sheet is always about finding a balance between giving enough information and giving too much information. It’s interesting to be able to hear more clearly where composition stops and improvisation begins.
(This assumes that the musicians played off these lead sheets but I can’t imagine why Mr. Parks would go to the trouble of writing new scores only to release them for free on the internet!)
